What is Dolby Atmos?

What is Dolby Atmos? and should you care about it? i think we all should care about it. Dolby Atmos is true multidimensional listening experience in the cinema and at home. It precisely places and moves sounds anywhere to match the scene, including overhead. This is will change the way we watch and listening to movies for ever, after listing to a demo few days ago at Dolby's theater in CEDIA i was amazed how the sound travels around and across the room like there is a hundred of speakers in every corners you can't believe it until you hear it. Truly a new cinema experience.

How dos it work? until now with surround sound system the filmmakers of the movie would assign or route the sound to a specific channel for example the front channel (front speaker) or the side channel (surround speaker) this is how we would hear the sound travel from one side to the other, with Dolby Atmos filmmakers can actuality move the sound anywhere in the room is a 360 dimension which make us the listeners feel that the sound is coming from everywhere is the room and not just from a specific channel, amazing right! Dolby Atmos is the first audio format based on audio objects rather than channels. In Dolby Atmos, any sound, the helicopter, a blaring car horn, a yelling child can exist as an independent audio object, free of channel restrictions. It can be placed and moved anywhere, including anywhere overhead.

Dolby Atmos Hardware requirement? you first you need a surround receiver that support Dolby Atmos then if have an existing surround sound like 5.1 or 7.1 you will need to upgrade your speakers as well to support it or some speaker manufactures have an add on speaker that can be installed on top of your currant speakers, it's applicable to floor stand and book self speakers. If you have in-wall or in-ceiling speakers you need to add 2 or 4 speakers in the ceiling to get enjoy Dolby Atmos.
